Friend and Student, October 2013, Söderbärke, Sweden
In Sweden there is an old expression about death. When speaking of the deceased, we say that he has departed time. This statement gives me a reason to ponder a bit.
The sad space created by Dmitry Shuvalov’s departure from time is gradually being filled by a vast gratitude for the fact that he was such a friend, a teacher, and (though older) so close to me personally. His works, his status as a devotee of arts, and his life experience will never leave time.
Artist, Doctor of Art History
I worked with Dmitry Shuvalov for 17 years in the Drawing Department of the Vera Mukhina Leningrad Higher School of Art and Industry, from 1973 to 1990. In the beginning we were not so close, either spiritually or profes- sionally. I was a young teacher, and Shuvalov was also just beginning his work in the department. Although, unless I am mistaken, he already had some pedagogical experience.
